Fig. 7From: Effects of glutamine deprivation on oxidative stress and cell survival in breast cell linesGlutamine deprivation results in aberrant hydrogen peroxide production. Graph illustrating hydrogen peroxide production after 24 h, 48 h, 72 h and 96 h of glutamine deprivation in MCF-7-, MDA-MB-231-, MCF-10A and BT-20 cell lines. The MCF-7 and MCF-10A cell lines demonstrated a temporal production of hydrogen peroxide whilst the MDA-MB-231 illustrated decreased levels of hydrogen peroxide. The MDA-MB-231 cell line was most prominently affected with generation of hydrogen peroxide rising to 1.53-fold when compared to cells propagated in complete growth medium. Levels of hydrogen peroxide decreased thereafter in a time-dependent manner to 0.89-fold after 96 h deprivation from glutamine relative to cells propagated in complete growth medium. The BT-20 cell line illustrated elevated levels of hydrogen peroxide levels relative to cells propagated in complete growth medium. An asterisk indicates significance with P-value < 0.05 when compared to cells propagated in complete mediumBack to article page
